Medications
We can provide prescriptions for important medications for your trip. We do not carry these prescriptions in our clinic but will write an electronic prescription to be filled at the pharmacy of your choice. The cost of the prescription will likely be up to your insurance provider and your pharmacy. Medications we prescribe include:
Antimalarials
Certain parts of the world are at risk for malaria. We can advise on and prescribe a variety of medications to prevent malaria, including Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil). We will counsel you on what specific medication we think is appropriate based on your itinerary and medical history.
Antibiotics
Depending on your itinerary, planned activities, and health history, we may recommend an antibiotic for you to take for prophylaxis or for self-treatment of certain conditions, such as leptospirosis and travelers’ diarrhea.
Altitude Illness
Altitude illness can limit one’s itinerary and cause serious disease and even death. For itineraries involving high altitude travel (over 9,800 feet / 3,000 meters), we can tailor a plan to prevent and treat altitude sickness. Such high altitude international destinations include the Andes in South America, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and the Himalayas in Asia, among other locations. Within the United States, high altitude destinations include parts of Alaska, the Rocky Mountains, etc.
Anti-Nausea/anti-Vomiting
We often prescribe a medication to help with self-treatment of nausea and/or vomiting.
Others As Needed
On a case-by-case basis, we may prescribe other medications as appropriate and necessary.
